German food retailer Rewe is reportedly planning to open an organic food supermarket in Dusseldorf in May.

According to the Financial Times Deutschland, Germany’s second-largest food retailer said it wants to challenge the belief that organic food is available only to the elite.

The new store will offer products under Rewe’s Fullhorn brand as well as recognised organic brands and regional products. The company plans to open a further three or four new organic foods stores within the year, the report said.

Sales of organic products in Germany are estimated to be around €3.5bn (US$4.6bn) per year, representing around 3% of the total food market.
