Deese will succeed Amos R McMullian, who is retiring from the position of chief executive but will remain with the company as nonexecutive chairman of the board.

Deese has worked for Flowers since 1964 and currently holds the position of president and chief operating officer.

“In 2000, the board asked that I continue as CEO for three more years to complete the sale of Keebler, to solve the problems at Mrs. Smith’s Bakeries, and to ensure an orderly transition to the next generation of leadership for our company,” McMullian was quoted by the Associated Press as saying. “I am pleased to report that we have accomplished those objectives.”
