“There is a small trial going on,” a spokesman for Tesco told just-food. The drivers would be recruited from Tesco’s labour force in Poland. “We’re got quite a big operation in Poland and we’re going through that,” he said.

Some of the drivers would be based in the company’s Milton Keynes warehouse to deliver to stores in south-eastern England, he said, but others may be based around the country. “They’ll be dispersed quite widely,” he said.

Tesco which has 1,800 UK stores, has 69 stores in Poland as part of a drive into Eastern Europe.
