Japanese retail giant Aeon intends to launch a new chain of urban supermarkets, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported yesterday (9 January).

Aeon’s influence in Japanese cities had previously been limited. The company hopes to broaden its customer focus to reach urban dwellers. The move to open small outlets is a response to government proposals to tighten geographical restrictions on openings of large outlets.

A new supermarket has been established in Yokohama. It will be run on a trail basis, as Aeon intend to gage its performance before wholly committing to the project.
