Senate Bill 730 has created a quandary over how to label seafood and aquaculture that employ more environmentally friendly production methods. The bill, supported by consumer and organic food groups, was needed to protect consumers in the absence of state or federal standards for organic seafood and aquaculture.
Opponents say environmentally friendly seafood costs more to produce, and the hot organic label lets sellers charge a premium to recoup the higher costs, adding that even some agricultural products containing enough contaminants to warrant a warning label can be marketed as organic.
