Interstate Bakeries, the maker of Twinkies and Wonder Bread, has asked a bankruptcy court to allow the company additional time to draft its reorganisation plan.

The company, which operates 45 bakeries, 800 distribution centres and has 27,000 employees, has said that it is still trying to formulate a plan that encompasses all its business interests and renegotiate contracts with unions. 


The company asked the deadline for filing its reorganisation plan to be moved back to 22 September and the deadline for acceptance of the plan to be 21 November, a report in the Associated Press noted.


If the company fails to submit a plan and get it accepted on time, under US bankruptcy law other parties are then able to recommend their own plans.


US Bankruptcy Judge Jerry Venters is scheduled to consider Interstate Bakeries’ request on 12 April.
