The EU has introduced a number of legislative reforms that are designed to tighten existing food safety legislation and significantly reduce the probability of future food crises.

These include changes to the food hygiene package originally adopted in 2004, new regulations to govern microbiological criteria for food stuffs, feed hygiene legislation, and controls on the production of food and animal feed.

The changes will affect all EU member countries and third parties wishing to export food or feed into the EU and are intended to regulate every level of the food chain.
