Reports in the UK press suggest that a split has developed in Morrisons’ management between Sir Ken Morrison and the non-executive directors over the appointment of a new chief executive.

According to a report in the Daily Mail, Morrison favours the appointment of a Morrisons old hand. It is rumoured that his favourite candidate is Marie Melnyk, who has worked for Morrisons for more than 30 years.

The non-executive directors, on the other hand, want to bring in an outsider to repair some of the damage from the retail chain’s GBP3bn acquisition of Safeway in 2004.
