In a statement to Just Food, the Italian confectionery group confirmed it has “moved forward with the final steps for the acquisition of an existing industrial site in Timisoara”.

“The project reflects Ferrero’s intention to establish a state-of-the-art industrial facility, building on Romania’s strong production tradition, strategic location and availability of skilled talent,” the owner of Nutella and Kinder brands said.

While Ferrero has a commercial office in Romania, it has no active production plants in the market.

The group did not respond to Just Food’s queries on the financial value of the transaction, construction timelines, the product lines earmarked for the site, or the regional markets the facility will serve.

Ferrero said it will provide further operational details at the “appropriate time”, adding it will “continue to work in close dialogue with the relevant national and local authorities to build a sustainable, long-term industrial partnership in Romania”.

The Romanian project follows recent capex moves by Ferrero around the world.

In July, the company announced an $86m investment in its Guanajuato facility in Mexico to increase production of Nutella.

That announcement followed plans, revealed in June, to invest €60m ($67.2m) in production facilities in France to also support the Nutella brand.

The capital injection is aimed at Ferrero’s plant in Villers-Écalles in Normandy and a site further north in Nieppe that is part of an “affiliate”, Biscuits Delacre.

Meanhile, in August, Ferrero snapped up Purely Elizabeth, a US-based business founded in 2009 that produces granola, oatmeal, and cereal.

That transaction followed the company’s $3.1bn acquisition of US cereal manufacturer WK Kellogg in July 2025, which added product lines including Froot Loops and Raisin Bran.
