Coop, Italy’s major supermarket chain (annual sales Lit16,000bn), plans to branch out beyond the country’s border and venture into a food and commercial centre in Zagreb, Croatia, with the possibility of another complex in the same area. The company, under pressure from Carrefour and Auchan-Rinascente at home, says it is also evaluating expansion into Slovenia and eastern European markets. Coop officials say development in the sector requires internationalisation. Coop’s initial investment in Croatia will be Lit80bn and grow steadily.
