Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin has announced that a Georgia company is voluntarily recalling a type of fruit salad because of possible contamination with a bacteria that can potentially cause disease.

The Salad Factory of 1576 Atlanta Road, Marietta, is voluntarily recalling packages of its “Cool Fruit” salad because it could possibly be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The salad contains cantaloupe, honeydew and grapes. It is packaged in 10 ounce and 16 ounce plastic containers and is sold in grocery stores. The lot affected by this recall was distributed only to Winn-Dixie stores according to The Salad Factory.

The Tennessee Department of Agriculture discovered the contamination during a routine sampling of the product from a Winn-Dixie store in Tennessee.

“Eating food contaminated with this bacteria can cause listeriosis, a disease that can be fatal to infants, the frail or elderly, and persons with chronic disease. If you have any of the product affected by this recall, do not eat it but return it to the store where it was purchased,” Commissioner Irvin warned.

“We will be checking store shelves to make sure the affected product has been removed. The Salad Factory has been very cooperative and helpful in making sure all the possible contaminated salad is withdrawn from sale,” said Irvin.
