Demand for antibiotic-free animals seems to be growing in the US after a major catering firm announced it will use only untreated chickens in its meals and also start begin working with meat producers to reduce the amount of drugs given to cows and pigs.

Starting in June, Bon Appetit Management, (which serves food to about 300,000 people, mostly in university cafeterias), will only purchase chickens raised without the routine use of non-therapeutic antibiotics and will give a “purchasing preference” for all meat, dairy and seafood produced with reduced amounts of antibiotics.

In June, fastfood giant McDonald’s asked its suppliers to phase out antibiotics.
