The Indian government should bring out a comprehensive Processed Food Development Act say the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham).

In a paper on rationalisation and simplification of food laws, Assocham said the Act should contain enabling provisions for regulating genetically modified food items either by compulsory labelling or in certain cases banning such items being imported or manufactured and sold in the country.

The association argues that the law is needed ‘to make the Indian food industry viable and competitive.’
