GERMANY: Meat tested for BSE in unauthorised laboratory
The German government is facing criticism this week as officials admitted that meat has been for BSE by an authorised laboratory in Bavaria before being sold to consumers. This latest food scandal is thought to concern around 40,000 beef carcasses. A statement released by the German agriculture ministry attempted to reassure the public, promising: “The [16] federal states will seize existing meat and meat products from all the animals tested for BSE by an unauthorised laboratory in Bavaria until all outstanding questions have been cleared up.”
