Containing antacids, Surpass is intended to take Wrigley into the profitable pharmaceutical aisle, where other gums containing aspirin or antacids already exist. The market is large enough for the producers to co-exist however, and Wrigley has now formed a health care division with the intention of exploring other possibilities for medicinal gum.

Wrigley has also posted revenue of US$2.15bn for 2000, up 4.4% from the previous year. Earnings rose 6.7% on 1999, reaching US$328.9m.
