Carrefour has held talks with local partner Groupe Mestdagh but neither side would comment on the impasse in discussions over the future of the GB stores.

In June, Carrefour warned that trading at the 16 directly-owned GB stores had not improved sufficiently, despite “major investment”, as staff costs grew faster than turnover.

There are some 900 jobs at risk across the 16 stores, unless buyers or franchisees can be found. Mestdagh operates 64 Champion stores in Belgium, in a variety of formats and trading structures, including a number of franchise stores.
