Green tea may not offer protection against stomach cancer as previous research has indicated.

A comprehensive study released on Wednesday suggests that there is no health benefit among those who drank large or small amounts of green tea. Several previous studies have shown that green tea does have a beneficial effect in this area

The research team, led by Dr. Yoshitaka Tsubono of the Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine in Japan, followed 26,000 men and women for 8 years.

The study and commentary are published in the 1 March issue of The New England Journal of Medicine.
