The launch could come with the opening of several mini-format stores in the country. The first stores will be opened in the Russian capital but a Metro C&C spokesperson did not rule the launch of mini-shops in other Russian regions.
According to sources in the Moscow government, Metro will initially open around ten new stores. Due to the smaller area of the new stores, Metro C&C will be able to operate them in downtown Moscow.
Currently Metro C&C operates its smaller format in such countries as Germany, Belgium, France and Japan. “We are now considering whether a mini-format concept is interesting in the case of Moscow,” said Metro’s corporate affairs director Oksana Tokareva.
Metro refused to give any details of future expansion in Russia, noting that the country’s markets remains one of the most promising for the company.
