The company, which runs over 700 discount stores, supermarkets and hypermarkets in Russia, is deciding whether to expand its presence in the country’s fast-growing retail sector.
“We are discussing this internally and seeing if we would benefit from expanding into [the cash-and-carry] format,” an X5 spokesman told just-food from Moscow. “There is only operator in the sector, which is Metro cash-and-carry.”
The spokesman said he expects the company’s management to reach a decision by the end of the year.
X5 has admitted it is keen on expanding still further throughout Russia and is eyeing acquisitions. The company has been linked to local rival Grossmart.
