French retail giant Carrefour is planning to open 200 new hypermarkets worldwide over the 2004-2006 period.

The company’s real estate director, Jean-Christophe Bretxa, said stores openings for 2003 included 55 hypermarkets, over 130 supermarkets and 450 discount outlets, reported AFX International Focus.

Investments in new stores are expected to reach €2.5bn (US$2.98bn) in 2003, compared to €2bn in the previous year.

The retailer recently reported revenue for the first nine months of the year of €57.26bn, compared to €55.92bn a year earlier, representing growth of 2.4% in real terms. Carrefour said the increase was 6.2% in constant currency terms, in line with its full-year target.
