Farm research group ISMEA said production of olive oil in Italy would fall to 549,273 tonnes due to April frosts in central and northern regions, where output was seen down by more than a third, reported Reuters.

In the Pulgia region in the south, production was seen rising 11% to 216,290 tonnes.

“Probably we are facing one of the best campaigns seen in recent years,” ISMEA president Arturo Semerari said, referring to the quality of the olive crop.

“The share of extra-virgin oil in the total production could be the highest in the last five years,” he was quoted by Reuters as saying.
