The Free Trade Area of the Americas meeting being held in Miami has seen two competing camps vying for control.


Under an agreement being pushed by the United States and Brazil, the rancorous issue of agricultural subsidies would be ignored in an Americas deal, pending an agreement at the World Trade Organisation’s Doha Development Round. Canada, Mexico, Chile and several Caribbean countries are circulating a compromise draft that would keep the subsidies issue on the FTAA agenda but moved to a second tier of negotiations.


A final text is slated for Friday, the day after 20,000 or more protesters are expected to turn up for a march.
