Calavo Growers has signed a deal with Mexican vegetable producer Agricola Belher that will see the launch of Calvavo-branded tomatoes this autumn.
Lee E. Cole, Calavo’s chairman, president and CEO, called Belher a “top-quality producer”.
He added: “We are confident that this expansion will make a meaningful incremental contribution to company revenues and expect tomato sales in the range of US$20-25m in fiscal 2008.”
While California-based Calavo sources and markets a range of perishable goods, its prime focus is fresh and processed avocadoes but Cole said the tie-up with Belher would open up another major branded product category for the company.
“Calavo has established a reputation for unparalleled and consistent quality as the leading avocado brand, and we believe this positive awareness will support our successful entry and sales growth in a second, major branded product category,” Cole said.
“In so doing, we are capitalising on our core strengths in marketing and distribution as well as leveraging our substantial investments in infrastructure.”
