Korean sweets manufacturer Lotte Confectionery Co revealed earlier today that it has been granted the US patent for its technological process of extracting polyphenol from cacao. It will now begin working with a US drinks company to develop a functional food drink that contains the compound.

An employee from the company commented: “Polyphenol is known to be effective in preventing cavities and protecting the stomach lining, and the country [South Korea] depends mostly on its imports. Our technology can be applied directly to making snacks, drinks and health supplements at this stage.”
