Siddiqui worked in the US Department of Agriculture for four years under Clinton, representing the administration in trade negotiations.

Sections of the US agribusiness community welcomed Obama’s nomination.

“We’re pleased to see someone with such a strong agriculture background as Siddiqui nominated for this post,” said Don Butler, president of the National Pork Producers Council. “He’s a tough negotiator and is inheriting a lot of agricultural trade issues, with pork issues in China and Russia at the top of the list.”
