Codex is seeking comments on the flavouring rules by 30 May to be approved by the organisation’s ruling commission, in Rome, at a session in early July.

The commission is unlikely to agree to the proposals in their entirety and a working party has been asked to reconsider a section highlighting controls for “certain biologically active substances”, notably which flavourings should be covered and how they should be evaluated.

Codex is also looking for comments on proposed standards regarding draft maximum levels for tin in canned foods. The organisation also wants feedback on the maximum levels for 3-MCPD (3-Monochloropropane-1,2-diol) in liquid condiments containing acid-hydrolyzed vegetable proteins and on reducing 3-MCPD when producing acid-hydrolyzed vegetable protein.

The July commission will also consider a range of procedural changes governing how Codex decides standards for a wide range of concerns, ranging from additives to medicine residues.
