The committee, assessing the suitability of existing risk assessment methods, has called for urgent research, especially regarding the potential environmental risk posed by nanotechnologies. The technology is being developed for many food uses, such as nano-particle coatings for chocolates and biscuits.

The committee suggested topics “urgently requiring additional data and scientific knowledge” are “the prediction of environmental concentrations” and “new ecotoxicity tests.”

It also wants studies into nanoparticles crossing body membranes “within the cardiovascular system or… the blood–brain barrier”. The committee also fears existing tests may not accurately assess “human health hazards for all types of nanoparticles”.
