Irish fresh produce group Fyffes has benefited from increased banana consumption during the recession, a spokesperson for the group told just-food.
“The banana product is reasonably recession resistant. People consume as many bananas, if not more, during a recession,” the spokesperson told just-food.
On Friday (4 September), the group posted a jump in first half earnings.
The company said that “better than expected” conditions in Continental Europe and higher selling prices had allowed it to avoid some of the worse effects of the recession.
