Around 25% of the nation’s 13,000 dairy farmers are expected to leave the profession in the light of the crippling costs bought on by industry deregulation. For those remaining however, an increasing number are tuning to robotic assistance on their farms, hoping that it could be the answer to falling revenues.


Developed by Dutch group Lely Industries, each robot costs around A$250,000. It is estimated however that once in place, the robotic milking could cut labour costs and boost production by around 20%.
