The UK retail group was responding to speculation that the retailer could be planning to take its food sales on-line following the appointment of Steven Esom as director of food.

“We aren’t currently planning to offer food over the Internet, although it isn’t something we’ve ruled out in the future,” a spokesperson for the company told just-food.

Esom oversaw the expansion of Waitrose’s online business before jumping ship to M&S this week. According to a report in the Daily Telegraph, his appointment at Marks & Spencer is believed to make online expansion a “definite possibility”.
