FritoLay, the snack foods arm of PepsiCo, yesterday (12 August) opened a “green” manufacturing facility in the US state of Connecticut.

The Killingly facility, funded by a government support grant, features a co-generation system, which will produce almost 100% of the site’s electrical requirements.


The facility will use the waste heat generated to produce steam to help with the manufacturing of its snack products, which PepsiCo said would help the site reduce its environmental footprint.


“Today’s launch of the co-gen system is an example of sustainability and partnership in action,” said Leslie Starr Keating, senior vice president, operations, Frito-Lay North America.


With the installation of the co-gen system, Frito-Lay said the site will reduce carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide emissions, which contribute to greenhouse gas.
