Thousands of Russian dairy farmers intend to disrupt supplies of milk to local processors and distributors if the Russian authorities do not move to increase purchase prices.
According to Russian reports, the price paid for milk is currently 10% below production costs.
A spokesperson for the protesters said the recent detection of a milk cartel accused of collaberating to drive milk prices down had not, as yet, led to an improvement in the industry.
“We are ready to destroy our milk,” the farmers’ spokesperson warned.
Government-backed negotiations will be staged tomorrow (5 August).
