The European Commission is pushing for further research into testing the safety of genetically modified foods and crops. The EC hopes that the move will improve the operation and acceptance of European Union controls under directive 2001/18/EC on the release into the environment of genetically modified organisms.

Some previous EU authorisations of GM products have been flouted by member states wanting to maintain national bans because the EU Council of Ministers has backed them.
In a new report on EU GM controls, the Commission promised to work with the European Food Safety Authority to improve environmental risk assessments, “increasing the overall transparency of, and confidence in, the evaluation process”.
