German retail giant Rewe has competed the restructuring of its board of directors in a bid to give the group a more focused sales and distribution strategy. The twin functions of purchasing and distribution are to work more closely together, indicated incoming chairman of the supervisory board Dr Klaus Burghard after the new board of directors was elected. The board has been expanded to include five new members, although there is no immediately obvious successor to chairman Hans Reischl, who is due to retire in three and a half years.
Reactions to the shuffle were varied. Managers from within Rewe were reported by Lebensmittelzeitung as feeling the restructure did not go far enough. Other observers identified positive opportunities for Rewe to quickly make over its purchasing-oriented organisation into a sales and marketing entity.
