Canada’s Ministry of Fisheries and Oceans has decreased the maximum quota catch levels of cod from its northern Atlantic waters to 5,600 tonnes, a reduction from last year’s level of 7,000 tonnes. For the next three years, these harvest numbers are likely to remain at the new low level because of government plans to stabilise and encourage recovery of the stocks. Research on stock distribution, age and seal predation of cod will be performed during this period.

Meanwhile, flagging prices for shrimp on international markets have led to Newfoundland fishing companies closing the fishery and laying off 3,000 workers. Shrimp processors estimate prices have dropped 35% this year.
