The rampage occurred in the northeastern city of Shenyang, where witnesses reported seeing Guan Jiadong (35) chase the inspectors down the street hacking and stabbing at them with two long knives.

At one point he turned round to attack to men already injured, according to reports in the Liaoshen Evening News.

Seven hundred police chased Guan for 14 hours after he fled on a motorbike.

A police official has suggested that Guan is likely to be executed if he is found guilty in court: “The punishment for such serious crimes is usually quick and severe.”
