She said the company would open subsidiaries in France, Greece and Italy in the next two to four years to grow its presence in those key Mediterranean markets.

In addition, Palencia, northern -Spain based Gullon will invest EUR50m (US$65m) to expand in Europe’s fast-growing functional-cookie market and boost production for export.

“We have ambitious expansion plans and a key area will be health-benefiting products with value-added ingredients,” Lamalfa said. She added that Gullon generated 25% of last year’s EUR110m in sales from the international markets.

Growing in the good-for-you cookie market won’t be easy. In Spain, Gullon’s archrivals Sos Cuetara and United Biscuits-owned Galletas Maria are rushing to lead the burgeoning sector and have a plethora of functional cookies and pastries crowding supermarket aisles.
