Mars has cut the size of a number of chocolate products on sale in Australia in a move that the company claims will help tackle obesity in the country.

A line of products, including the Mars bar, will be sold in smaller sizes as the confectioner looks to “tackle the issue of Big Food”.

“At Mars we are constantly looking at ways to make products better for our consumers. We know chocolate isn’t an apple,” said Peter West, general manager for Mars Snackfood Australia. “It is a treat food and should be a small bit of pleasure in your day.”

West said the move would reduce the size of a Mars bar by 11%. The decision was one of “many initiatives” undertaken by Mars to promote healthy eating, he added.

“Eleven out of twelve of our ‘Little Bit of’ Fun Size Bars are now less than 100 calories, making them perfect to have as a treat,” West said.
