Spanish hypermarket chain Al Campo saw sales of fairtrade goods soar 70% to EUR234,600 (US$304,407.57)in 2006 amid booming growth for such products in Spain.

Ethically conscious Spaniards bought up to 127,100 fairtrade products, most of them food items, a company spokeswoman told just-food.


“There is huge growth in all formats, products and channels,” she said. Fairtrade sales have grown strongly in the past few years and should continue to boom in 2007, she added.


Al Campo, part of French hypermarket network Auchan, sells the goods in partnership with aid agency Intermon Oxfam. Intermon Oxfam distributes the products under its own label and other brands. Best-selling products include Café Quita and chocolate bars Mascao, the spokeswoman noted.


Alcampo expects to launch new fairtrade food products this year. In 2006, the chain introduced new brands for wheat and white rice, sugar, cacao syrup, chocolate, coffee and snacks.
