Liquid milk producer China Mengniu Dairy reportedly plans to invest in expanding its raw milk production in China this year.

Citing executive director and VP Yang Wenjun, Asia Pulse said that the company aims to increase the number of “mega pastures”, which house up to 10,000 cows, from seven to over 20 in the next three years.

“Mengniu plans to pour more money to acquire shares in existing pastures or build up its own pastures,” Yang reportedly told reporters at the sidelines of the Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference.

By controlling more pastures, the dairy group aims to both increase raw milk production and ensure its quality.

The quality reputation of Chinese dairy products was severely damaged by the melamine tainted milk scandal last September, which saw thousands of babies hospitalised with kidney problems.
