Australia#;s Hervey Bay is to gain a new organic food processing plant which will see the creation of 40 new jobs. Trial products will be available from July, while the site will officially open in October.

The factory has received a grant worth A$550,000 (US$289,000) from the Federal Government#;s Invest Wide Bay scheme. As well as being a working plant, the site is intended to become a tourist attraction educating visitors about the processes involved in producing organic food.

Owner-operator Tim Nelson said: “Those farmers that found it not cost-effective to set up a food processing plant or a food packing plant on their own farm, and the rules and regulations which govern food handling and food safety now make it quite expensive to set a food handling, food packing plant, we will offer them an opportunity to contract pack at our premise.”
