The proposed change is in response to a petition submitted by the National Frozen Pizza Institute (NFPI).

The agency revealed that the “pizza with meat” and “pizza with sausage” standards of identity may be inhibiting manufacturers of federally-inspected frozen pizzas from producing and marketing the new styles of pizza demanded by modern consumers. It has therefore suggested that they be removed.

The FSIS has requested that any comments on the proposal are sent on or before 2 January 2002.
