Germany imports more turkeys from other European Union (EU) country than any other Member State, according to festive figures released by Eurostat, the statistical agency.

Looking at 2002, out of a total intra-EU turkey trade of €58m (US$72m), the apparent insatiable appetite of Germans for fresh or chilled turkeys gobbled up €20m of this demand, followed by the Spanish (€9m) and the Irish (€6m).

Eurostat also noted that the Danes usually only eat turkey at Christmas with 80% of intra-EU imports taking place in December. The import demand of other Member States is spread more evenly across the year.
