Food Lion, the US supermarket owned by Belgium’s Delhaize, has confirmed that it will be cutting 80 jobs at its corporate headquarters.

“In today’s economic environment, we cannot remain stagnant and it cannot be business as usual. In order to maintain our strength and remain a viable and strong business in the future, we needed to take this action and redeploy resources. The position eliminations were across all job functions,” a spokesperson for Food Lion told just-food today (23 January).


“Our retail stores, distribution centres and transportation facilities were not affected,” the spokesperson added.


Food Lion employs approximately 1,750 people at its headquarters in Salisbury, North Carolina. It operates more than 1,300 supermarkets, either directly or through affiliated entities, under the names of Food Lion, Bloom, Bottom Dollar Food, Harveys and Reid’s.
