Woolworths called in the administrators in November. The last of its 807 stores across the UK were shuttered this month when a buyer failed to materialise, resulting in 27,000 redundancies.

“We are confident we can help to support the local community in these towns who have lost a major high street retailer in Woolworths,” Nick Canning, Iceland MD, said in a statement emailed to just-food.

Canning said that the acquisition was in addition to Iceland’s existing store opening programme.

“We aim to develop our business in 2009 by continuing to offer our customers fantastic value everyday across our range of frozen, grocery and chilled products,” he said.
