Waitrose saw a surge in sales in the week leading up to Christmas, the upmarket supermarket’s parent John Lewis Partnership revealed today (2 January).

Sales jumped 41% in the seven-day period, rising to GBP111.3m (US$160.4m).


The figures will be welcome news for Waitrose, which has seen its market share come under pressure as consumers trade down in response to worsening economic conditions.


According to the latest figures released by TNS Worldpanel, Waitrose’s share dipped from 3.8% to 3.6% for the 12 weeks ending 30 November.
