French prepared salads group Florette has joined forces with two farmers in Spain for the creation of what it describes as two of the largest greenhouses for crops in Spain.

The 150,000sq m greenhouses, situated in the village of Cadreita, Navarra, are in the first stage of production and represent an investment of EUR5m (US$6.7m) for the firm.

The second phase of the development will begin in February, the firm said today (13 December). Once completed, the facilities will produce around 1,300 tonnes of vegetables a year, doubling annual production of Florette products, and generating 20 jobs.

Jorge Moreno, director of agriculture for Florette, said the goal of the facilities is to have “first-quality” products throughout the year, and a production area that is “as close as possible to the factory where they are processed”.

The products to be grown at these facilities, including arugula, watercress and lettuce, will be distributed throughout Spain and Portugal.

Florette said it has put back the opening of a factory in Ingenio, Gran Canaria until April. The firm originally said it planned to begin production on 1 December, however work is still being carried out on the facility, which will have a production capacity of 2m bags of Florette per year once completed.
