Following its successful entry into Hong Kong in May 2000, Starbucks Coffee International, a wholly owned subsidiary of Seattle-based Starbucks Coffee Co and its Hong Kong partner, Maxim’s Caterers Limited, has announces details of its proposed expansion into Southern China and Macau.

The Southern China Starbucks stores will be developed and operated by Coffee Concepts (Southern China) Ltd, a new joint venture that has been formed by Mei-Xin (Int) Ltd of the Maxim’s Group and Starbucks Coffee International. The JV will open its first store toward the end of 2002. Starbucks stores in Macau are due to open mid year and will be operated by Coffee Concepts (Hong Kong) Ltd.

Michael Wu, MD Maxim’s Caterers, said: “It seems only natural that we should expand our presence into Southern China and Macau. Coffee culture has really caught on in Hong Kong in a big way, and we are confident that consumers in these two new areas will also enjoy the Starbucks Experience.”

Pedro Man, president of Starbucks Coffee Asia Pacific, a region that forms the cornerstone of the group’s international expansion, added: “We are extremely pleased that we are entering the Southern China and Macau markets.

“We are delighted to expand our operations based on the solid foundations of what has been achieved together with our partners in Hong Kong.”
