Marks and Spencer has appointed Jan du Plessis as a non-executive director with effect from 1 November.
Plessis, who was appointed chairman of the board of British American Tobacco in July 2004, is also a non executive director and chairman of the audit committee of Lloyds TSB.
“We are very pleased to announce the appointment of Jan du Plessis, who will bring a wide range of international business experience and brand knowledge,” said Sir Stuart Rose, chairman of Marks and Spencer.
Sir David Michels, Marks & Spencer’s deputy chairman added: “This appointment of Jan strengthens our governance credentials and we are delighted to welcome him to Marks and Spencer.”
