US coffee giant Starbucks will launch itself into France next year, opening a coffee bar in Paris’ fashionable Opéra district.

The move has met with a mixed response. Starbucks has already made inroads into a number of other European countries, including Germany, Spain and the UK, but French consumers are wedded to their little espressos and are unlikely to take easily to the idea of wandering around with a milky latte. Much of Starbucks’ business is takeaway, although it also offers chairs for eat-in customers. That said, Paris is a highly cosmopolitan city and visitors from the US may well flock to Starbucks.

The US company is to partner with French company Grupo Vips, a foodservice and retail operator.
